Folic Acid
If you're depressed, you may well be low in folic acid. In a study of 213 depressed patients at the Depression and Clinical Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, people with lower folic acid levels had more 'melancholic' depression and were less likely to improve with antidepressant drugs.
Very depressed people, and those diagnosed with schizophrenia, are often deficient in folic acid. A survey of such patients at Kings College Hospital's psychiatry department in London found one in three had borderline or definite folate deficiency. These patients then took part in a doubleblind, placebo controlled trial of folic acid for six months in addition to their standard drug treatment. The longer they took the folic acid, the better it worked! However, they were taking 15 mgs (the RDA is 300mcg!) Start with 5 mgs if you suffer from chronic or severe depression, together with 250mg of vitamin B6.
Both folic acid and vitamin B6 help 'tune up‘ the brain and increase production of SAMe, another intelligent nutrient that helps the brain towork better. SAMe (or TMG, from which it is made) is itself a natural antidepressant, and well worth supplementing. All of these nutrients not only help the brain to make more serotonin, but they are the masters of
methylation.
Bio-Recovery sells a 5 mg folic acid; most vitamin manufactures only offer .8 mg.
Studies have shown Folic acid is beneficial for
- relieving depression
- enhancing cerebral circulation
- breaking down homocysteine, a destructive neurotoxin that increases with age
- preventing neural tube defects in newborns such as spina bifida (known
since 1981)
Additionally:
- Folic Acid is one of the nutrients involved in the prevention of
arteriosclerosis. It is needed for the rapid conversion of homocysteine to
non-toxic cystathionine.
- Folic acid has been found to decrease the odds of getting lung cancer.
It has been shown to reverse changes found in the cervixes in dysplasia.
- Lithium lowers folic acid levels
